Fun fact


Iggesund Mill has roughly 700 employees. The site is some 100 hectares in size, which is equivalent to about 150 football fields. In 2017 we produced 400,000 cubic metres of paperboard – a length that would reach 10 times around the world.

Long and short fibers


The making of Invercote calls for a blend of long softwood fibres from spruce and pine trees plus shorter hardwood fibres from birch trees. Invercote’s unique features are achieved by carefully blending the fibres in the various layers of the paperboard. The long fibres give strength and elasticity, while the short fibres help to give the outer layer its even surface, which forms the basis of Invercote’s excellent print characteristics. It is important to keep the different tree species separated throughout the process, which all begins at the woodyard.

Multi-layered construction


The layers are merged together one at a time to form a multi-layered construction, which is the basis of Invercote’s stiffness, smoothness and flexibility. The paperboard is then put through press nips which squeeze out more of the water.

Pulp Mill - Digester


The wood chips are sorted to the same size to prevent quality problems which could affect that of the pulp. Rejected chips are burned along with the bark to provide additional bioenergy. The wood chips are then boiled in a digester for a minimum of six hours in a strong alkaline solution called white liquor. This process frees the cellulose fibres by dissolving the binding agent in the wood, lignin, and thereby transforms the white liquor into energy-rich black liquor.

Pulp Mill - Washing and bleaching


Inside the digester, most of the lignin is removed from the cellulose fibres. To remove the remaining lignin residue, the pulp is also washed and bleached in a multi-stage process. This process produces pulp that is pure, white and ready to be pumped onto the board machines.

Reel warehouse


To keep the production process running at all times, some paperboard reels are stacked in the reel warehouse for shorter periods before they are sent to customers. The system is totally automatic and can stack the reels to a height of 11 metres.

Water treatment


Sweden has abundant water compared to many other countries but this does not mean that we can waste it. The mill in Iggesund borrows its surface water from a nearby lake system and returns it to Iggesund Bay (the Baltic Sea) after cleaning and re-using it several times.


We work continually to decrease our water usage and we comply with Sweden’s tough environmental laws. The water goes through a multi-stage cleaning process to ensure that it will not impact the marine environment. Mechanical, biological, and chemical treatments are used to purify the water, which is regularly tested before it is released into the sea.

Wood yard


Wood is transported from the nearby forests to Iggesund’s woodyard every day. The wood comes from sustainably managed forests, whose trees can grow for 100 years to reach full maturity. Holmen’s forest management focuses primarily on producing timber suitable for sawn products such as floors and furniture. The logs that do not meet sawmill requirements along with residues from the sawing process and sorted younger trees are used for paperboard production.

The reels are then packed and sent out by ship, train or road transport to more than 100 countries worldwide. Good customer service and local presence are important to the Holmen Iggesund concept. Coating


At the final coating stage, one, two or more coating layers are applied, depending on what kind of Invercote product is being produced. The coating formulas are important factors for the board’s surface- and printing properties, and are well-kept secrets.

Drying section


At the drying section the paperboard is dried further by passing through a series of hot rollers heated by steam from the recovery boiler. The water content, which was 99 per cent at the beginning of the board machine, has now fallen to 5 per cent. After passing through the drying section, the board is calendered, a smoothing process which further improves the board’s surface.

Board machine - Wire section


The cellulose fibres are mixed with the purified water and pumped onto the wire section of the board machine. There, the separate layers of fibres are formed into a web on a forming wire – a fine plastic mesh from which the water drains away or is drawn off by suction.

Control room


The board machines are manned 24 hours a day by operators who make sure that everything runs efficiently. In the control rooms they monitor the process, solve problems and regularly check the paperboard quality.

Debarking drum


Large forklift trucks move the logs from the woodyard to the debarking drums. These two large steel cylinder drums, one for birch and one for pine, strip the logs of their bark. The debarked logs are then chopped up into chips which are sent to the pulp mill.

The history of Iggesund


Iggesund’s history has always revolved around what the forest provides and how we can use that to make premium products. In 1665 we received a royal permit to make iron and 20 years later we began. The iron was forged in fire fuelled by coal from the forest. At the beginning of the 1900s plans evolved to broaden the business by building a pulp mill. That mill was built in 1916 on the same location where it still stands today.


Subsequently, iron production gradually declined and in 1953 the iron mill was closed. In 1963 a new era began at Iggesund when the first paperboard machine was built. It was one of the first of its kind in Europe.

Bio energy


All the energy produced at Iggesund is bioenergy, extracted from residues from the trees used to manufacture Invercote.


The wood material that enters the bio co-location is used in a very effective way: what does not become sawn wood products or paperboard becomes energy. The bark on the logs from the debarking drum, sawdust and other wood residues are burned in a bio-boiler, creating large amounts of steam and electricity, which are then used in the process.

Jumbo reels


After being coated, the finished paperboard is rolled into massive reels, which can weigh up to 40 tons and contain 30,000 metres of paperboard. These reels are then cut down into customer-specific sizes, reels and sheets.

Quality control


Our quality laboratory is located between the two board machines. Online measurements are taken on the board machine to ensure that the paperboard’s quality meets the specifications. Other measurements are taken offline on each jumbo reel in our own quality laboratory. This stage ensures the quality of the online measurements and is complemented by additional quality parameters. The laboratory is manned 24 hours a day all year round.

Recovery boiler


The black liquor resulting from the boiling process in the digester is the fuel that runs the recovery boiler. The burning of black liquor produces steam, which is the main type of energy needed to operate the mill.


The chemicals used during the cooking process are fully recycled and reused. This internal cycle makes the mill entirely energy self-sufficient on non-fossil bioenergy and keeps the use of chemicals to a minimum.
